T-Shirts for Short Men: What to Look for and What Most Brands Get Wrong

I'm 5'8" with a shorter torso, and for most of my life I assumed t-shirts were supposed to look the way they looked on me — a little baggy at the waist, a little long in the body, the hem hanging somewhere awkward between my hip and my thigh. Not terrible, but not great either. Just... off.

The problem isn't the size. It's the proportions. When a medium t-shirt from most brands fits through the chest and shoulders, it's also cut for a guy who's 6 feet tall. The torso length is just built in, and there's nothing you can do about it short of getting it hemmed — which nobody actually does for a t-shirt.

What Most Brands Get Wrong

There are two things that most brands consistently get wrong for shorter men:

1. Torso length. A standard t-shirt from most brands will hit somewhere past the hip on a shorter guy. Ideally, you want the hem to land right around the top of the hip bone — just enough to tuck in cleanly if you want to, or wear untucked without the shirt looking like a dress. For me that's roughly 26–27" from shoulder to hem depending on the shirt.

2. Sleeve length. When the torso is sized for a taller guy, the sleeves usually are too. They end up drooping down toward the elbow instead of hitting mid-bicep. On a shorter guy, that kills the silhouette.

Most brands either ignore this entirely or offer a "slim fit" that just removes fabric from the sides without actually shortening anything. Slim fit is not the same as proportioned for a shorter frame. For a full breakdown of what to look for, see the t-shirt fit guide.

What to Actually Look For

When you're shopping for a t-shirt as a shorter guy, here's what actually matters:

Torso length — Look for brands that publish their garment measurements, not just size charts based on body measurements. You want the finished shirt length (shoulder to hem) to be in the 26–28" range depending on your height and how you like to wear it.

Sleeve length — The sleeve should end somewhere around mid-bicep. If it's creeping toward the elbow, the shirt was cut for someone taller.

Shoulder seam placement — The seam should sit right at the edge of your shoulder, not drooping down your arm. This is the easiest way to tell at a glance whether a shirt was built for your frame.

Collar construction — A bound, top-stitched collar holds its shape over time. A basic ribbed collar will stretch and roll after a few washes, which looks sloppy on any frame but especially on a shorter guy where details read more prominently.

The Standard T-Shirt from Abbreviated

Abbreviated built the Standard T-shirt specifically for shorter men, which means the proportions are scaled down across the board — not just the torso length, but the sleeve length and overall silhouette too.

It's cut from a 60/40 cotton-polyester blend at 180 GSM. That's a lighter, more breathable fabric than a heavyweight tee — it drapes cleanly rather than holding rigid structure, which makes it more versatile as a daily driver. The collar is bound and top-stitched, so it holds its shape through washing rather than stretching out after a few months.

The fit is slim without being fitted. It accentuates the chest and shoulders while staying relaxed through the midsection — the right balance for a t-shirt that works in most situations. The model in the photos is 5'8" wearing a Medium in the Short length.

Short vs. Shorter Length — Which One Do You Need?

The Standard T-shirt comes in two lengths: Short and Shorter. This distinction matters more than it might sound.

The Short length is designed for guys roughly in the 5'6"–5'9" range with a proportional torso. The Shorter length is for guys on the lower end of that range, anyone who runs particularly short in the torso, or anyone who wants a cropped look.

That last point is worth calling out: the Shorter length sits higher on the waist in a way that works really well as a relaxed crop — not a fitted crop top, just a cleaner, higher hem that pairs well with higher-rise pants or shorts. It's become a popular styling choice for shorter guys who want a more intentional, put-together silhouette without going full streetwear.

It comes in eight colors: Black, White, Dark Grey, Heather Grey, Navy Blue, Chicory (a warm brown), Olive, and Shale (a muted blue-grey). The core neutrals are what most guys end up rotating through, but the seasonal colors are worth trying if you want something less predictable.

What Customers Are Saying

The Standard T-shirt has 180 reviews. One customer at 5'6" called it "a great find — the fit is perfect through the shoulders and chest without being too long in the torso." Another at 5'8", 185 lbs bought two, liked them, then came back for five more, noting that "the arms rise slightly above the bicep to accentuate my workouts, and unlike other t-shirts, they fall slightly below the belt line, not under the crotch."

That second comment captures exactly what's hard to explain until you've worn it: when the sleeves, the hem, and the torso are all scaled for your frame, the shirt just looks right in a way that's immediately obvious but hard to articulate.

The Bottom Line

If you're a shorter guy who's been living with t-shirts that are slightly too long, the Standard T-shirt from Abbreviated is worth a try. It's $25, comes in two lengths, and ships with free returns — so there's no real risk in testing your size. Most guys buy a few once they find the fit.
